"My fellow DTE students and I have been a source of support for each other, and I look forward to having them as both teaching colleagues and friends."
My motivation for pursuing graduate work:
I was working as a photographer and photographer's assistant. Some of the photographers I worked for were also teaching part-time. I helped them out in the classroom and on field trips and that is what first got me interested in teaching.
My reasons for choosing Berkeley:
I knew the extensive amount of student teaching experience would help prepare me for the classroom in a way no other program could. I was also attracted by Berkeley's reputation as having pre-eminent graduate programs.
What I like most about my program:
I have enjoyed spending the past two years developing relationships with my fellow DTE students. We have been a source of support for each other and I look forward to having them as both teaching colleagues and friends. The program makes every effort to provide us with a well-rounded education which balances the practical and theoretical, something I have appreciated very much.
My current teaching and research:
My most recent placement was at Melrose School in Oakland. Melrose is in an economically disadvantaged part of the city. Its student body includes Latinos, African-Americans, and Southeast Asians. Melrose was an excellent place for me to teach and conduct my master's research, which focused on children's self-perceptions of difference. I worked extensively with a group of culturally and linguistically diverse students. We met together each week to explore how each student felt that he or she was different across many domains--academically, socially, linguistically, culturally, and racially. I also interviewed each student individually for my research.
