At Excel One-on-One Program college students share with girls and boys grades 4th-8th their academic skills and hobbies. Tutors instill in the students a love for learning by helping them build the study habits needed to excel academically. Mentoring is a key feature of the program: through the character development plan tutors encourage the students to develop self-esteem and become women and men capable of serving others in meaningful ways.

Each week the tutor will set academic and character goals with her or his student. At the end of each tutoring session, the tutors and students will spend some time evaluating last week's goals and setting new ones. Tutors keep record of student's progress and meet with the parents at the end of the semester to share with them their child's progress at Excel.

Tutors work three hours a week, and are required to attend the orientation sessions and participate in weekly one-hour training and evaluating sessions. Girl's program meets Thursdays 3:15-4:00 p.m. and Saturdays 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. Boy's Program meets Mondays and Wednesdays 3:00-4:30 p.m.

Education 97 and 197 students, in addition to tutoring and attending training/ evaluating seminars, will be asked to hand a written evaluation of their experience and help staff with school visits and parent meetings.
