Jubilee West assists the residents of the Prescott Community, located west of Mandela Parkway, to recognize and access their power through housing, literacy, food, job training, ESL, GED, computer training, and other social services. The Youth Program was originally founded as a recreational program and has developed into an academic achievement and educational enrichment program. The primary focus of the Youth Program is the raising of the levels of academic proficiency in the basic skills of reading, writing and arithmetic for students in the grades K-7 in the Prescott, Sacred Heart and St. Martin de Porres Schools. The goal of the Youth Program is to help young people of this community see education as a concrete way to fulfill their aspirations by supporting and fostering their academic skills and self-esteem. U.C. students will be expected to bring to this academic activity their innovative teaching ideas and techniques, and curriculum ideas related to the basic reading, writing, and arithmetic. U.C. students ultimately serve as mentors. As such, they are also expected to be comfortable with children and respect their individuality, privacy, and confidence. The Youth Services Director will orient tutors about the expectations and goals of the Youth Program and facilitate curriculum, event, and activity planning.
The Program operates from 2:45-6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Youth Program needs 4 U.C. students per day, five days per week. Education 97/197 tutors should expect to work with groups of 6 to 7 students, and to stay until 5:30 p.m. for children requiring special attention.
