Utilizing Internet-Mediated Communication to Enable Community and School Partnerships Supporting Literacy Development

The purpose of this pilot project at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Berkeley is to attempt to address some of the needs of underachieving minority students by coordinating the resources of local schools, the business community, and UC Berkeley. This project has four objectives: 1) to address the needs of students who are struggling to master reading and writing; 2) to develop and test a model for school, community and university partnerships using Internet-based communication environments; 3) to examine the role of Internet-mediated communication in literacy learning at the middle school; and 4) to introduce students and teachers to potential applications of Internet technology. The heart of this project is an individual tutorial which matches an underachieving student with a member of the staff at UC Berkeley.

This project is a collaboration with the Instructional Technology Program at UC Berkeley. It is funded through the office of Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Carol Christ. The principal investigator is Richard McCallum.
