Registration Procedures for All Other Sections

  • ED 97: If you are a freshman or a sophomore, you enroll in ED 97.
  • ED 197: If you are a junior or a senior with at least 60 semester units prior to the semester, you enroll in ED 197.

  1. Descriptions of the various ED 97/197 sections can be found in ED 97/197 binders in the Student Services Office (1600 Tolman Hall); they are also posted on a bulletin board in the Graduate School of Education (GSE) lobby.

  2. Choose the section in which you would like to enroll.

  3. There is a contact person listed for each Education 97/197 section. The contact person oversees all registration, enrollment, and grading. Call the contact person listed for your chosen section to apply and/or arrange the field study.

  4. The contact person will give you the course control number.

For your convenience, the Tutoring in the Berkeley Public Schools, Sections 2-9 will have a representative from the Berkeley Teachers Center on campus during the first three weeks of the semester from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Tolman's second floor lobby (in front of the Education/Psychology Library).

  5. 45 hours of fieldwork per semester = 1 unit of credit. You may take up to 4 units for most sections. Education 97/197 must be taken on a pass/no pass basis.

  6. You do not need to fill out an application form to register for ED 97/197. However, each section has its own application system. Please call the contact person to find out the appropriate procedure. Turn in all journals and papers to your section's contact person.

  7. You can add ED 97 and ED 197 like any other course via Tele-BEARS. It is very important that you register for the correct section; each school or program has a different section number and a different course control number. If you have any questions which are not addressed in the Registration Procedures please go to 1600 Tolman Hall or call 642-5345. Be sure to call Tele-BEARS to confirm your enrollment in the correct section.

  8. Sections 9, 11, 13-16, 18, 19, 25-26, 34-35, 38, 48, 50, 55, 56, 58, 59, 60, and 63 meet the Education Minor field study requirement. If you have questions about these ED 97/197 field study sections, or the Education Minor in general, please contact the Undergraduate Minor Advisor in Student Services, 1603 Tolman Hall, or call 642-0138.

  9. For those students who are interested in an independent project or who want to work with a school or organization that does not have a section of ED 97 or ED 197, pick up the Education 97/197, Section 1 Independent Field Studies Projects form from 1600 Tolman Hall or contact ed97_197@uclink.berkeley.edu. The Director of the ED 97/197 Field Studies Program, Dr. Lisa Kala, will review applications and make final decisions on admission of applicants for independent projects.
