Registration Procedures for SECTION 1 Independent Field Studies Projects

NOTE: This Section DOES NOT satisfy the Education Minor Requirement

  • ED 97: If you are a freshman or a sophomore, you enroll in ED 97.
  • ED 197: If you are a junior or a senior with at least 60 semester units prior to the semester, you enroll in ED 197.

  1. Section 1 is for students who wish to undertake field studies activities at a placement NOT already listed as an ED97/197 field placement site.

  2. The primary requirement is tutoring or activities approved in your independent project proposal.

  3. Section 1 is offered during the academic year and the summer sessions.

To Enroll in Section 1:

  1. The student needs to complete the Independent Project Proposal (pdf file) sheet and the Sponsor Participating Agreement Form (pdf file). You can download them from here or pick them up from 1600 Tolman Hall.

    You will need to download Adobe Acrobat Reader to view and print these documents.

  2. Leave completed forms in Student Services Office. If you have any questions, you can call at 642-5345 or email at ed97_197@uclink.berkeley.edu

  3. After proposals are reviewed, the student is contacted beginning the first week of the semester and if approved, is given a course control number.

  4. Students are required to keep their own timesheets. Extra timesheets are available in 1600 Tolman. These timesheets (initialed by your site supervisor) and other materials are due on the last day of instruction for the semester/session.

  5. Materials due include:

    • Completed and initialed timesheets
    • A cover letter with the following information:
    • Student name
    • Student ID#
    • Semester, course, and section number
    • Total number of hours worked
    • Number of units completed (verified by the number of hours initialed on your timesheets).


    Please staple materials (or enclose in an envelope attention to Lisa Kala) and hand into 1600 Tolman Hall (8-12 noon and 1-4 pm) by the last day of instruction for the semester/session.
