Policy and Organizations Research

While the United States has many excellent schools and universities, it has all too many that fail their students. As a result, school improvement and reform have become serious efforts at the site, district, state, and national levels. Yet ensuring that all of our schools are "good" schools has proven to be a major challenge. There are no easy answers to the complex problem of how to achieve deep understanding, high performance, and educational equity in American education. However, we are convinced that solutions can be developed.

The Policy and Organizations Research program applies the disciplines of sociology, history, and economics to examine educational policy and institutions. In addressing questions of quality and equity, we investigate the enduring problems of schooling and assess the contributions made by policy and school reform initiatives. We seek students who, like us, dedicate themselves to the theoretical breadth and depth required to investigate and assess which policies and practices are truly effective.

Policy students take courses across the three thematic areas of POME. Standards of evidence coupled with the tools of qualitative and quantitative research prepare students to investigate the problems at hand and find empirical evidence on which to base action. Additional opportunities to hone these skills can be found in research groups and apprenticeship (i.e., mentored research) experiences. The resources within the Graduate School of Education and across the UC Berkeley campus expand the opportunities for students to develop an independent research focus.

The course of study can lead to an MA or PhD in Policy and Organizations Research.

Masters of Arts degree in Education (MA)

Doctor of Philosophy degree in Education (PhD)
