Program Evaluation and Assessment

Program Evaluation and Assessment

Program Evaluation and Assessment is designed for students with a professional background in education who want to pursue careers as professional evaluators and assessment developers in the field of education. We encourage applicants who have a mathematical, statistical, or computer data analysis background and an interest in education. We also encourage applicants with a focus in education who want to build their methodological skills for quantitative research and evaluation. Students are encouraged to combine substantive educational topics with a variety of methodological topics in their course of study, to provide a context for methodological applications.

Students will learn a variety of research methods with the goal of further developing and then applying them in education, public policy, and other institutional and organizational settings. All students complete a sequence of courses providing a foundation in educational research methodologies, assessment theory and practice, and evaluation theory and practice. Additionally, they participate in apprenticeships with ongoing assessment and evaluation projects.

The course of study can lead to an MA or PhD in Program Evaluation and Assessment.

PhD in Program Evaluation and Assessment

The PhD in Program Evaluation and Assessment takes advantage of the many assessment and evaluation projects conducted by faculty from the Graduate School of Education and beyond. The core of the program is the study of rigorous methodologies appropriate for the non-experimental reality of educational research and development. It prepares students for the sound application of a theory to a specific situation (e.g., an educational program or a test). Apprenticeships and research assistantships, funded by external agencies and projects, are available for eligible students in a variety of areas.

The PhD in Program Evaluation and Assessment prepares graduates both to participate in and to direct assessment and evaluation projects at the national, state, and local levels; to serve as consultants on evaluation methodology; and to apply advanced methods in evaluation and assessment to educational projects.

MA in Program Evaluation and Assessment

Students who are admitted into the MA program will choose from the same course offerings as doctoral students, with a 1- 2 year individual course of study designed in consultation with a faculty advisor. Master's candidates can choose either the Plan I or Plan II framework:

Plan I: coursework + comprehensive master's thesis (with 2 faculty readers)
Plan II: coursework + a First-Year Oral exam + final paper (with 2 readers) of lesser scope than the master's thesis.
