Requirements for admission to the DTE program include:

  • Strong interest in understanding child development as a basis for elementary teaching.
  • Desire to explore the interplay between theory and reflective practice.
  • Experience working with elementary school children, preferably in a public school setting.
  • 3 letters of recommendation - including one academic and one describing work with elementary age children (mandatory).
  • Undergraduate degree with 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) or better in the junior and senior years.
  • Applications to the UC Berkeley Graduate Division.
  • Basic Skills Requirement (Required of all applicants to programs leading to a credential; 3 options for passing)
  • For incoming students that want to be considered for summer financial aid packages, we strongly encourage you to file FAFSA forms for 2011/12 AND 2012/13.

CSET (California Subject Examinations for Teachers) Required of all applicants to programs leading to a multiple or single subject teaching credential. Please include a photocopy of your score report with your application if possible. Your application will not be considered for admission if you have not taken the CSET by end of January 2012 .

The qualifications below may enhance an applicant's chances for admission.

  • Inclusion of a personal/professional resume with your application.
  • Devotion to examining and rethinking personal assumptions.
  • Cross-cultural living experience in the US or abroad.
  • Fluency in a language other than English.
  • Familiarity with educational technology, web design.
  • Personal experience in the visual or performing arts
