Development in Mathematics and
Science
Overview
The program in Development in Mathematics and Science (DMS) focuses on the learning and teaching of mathematics and science in the pre-school through middle school years, with special focus on social and cultural aspects of children’s developing mathematical and scientific understandings. In addition to its core faculty (Metz, Saxe, and Gearhart), the program draws on faculty in Human Development (HD) investigating developmental change as well as faculty in Education, Mathematics, Science, and Technology (EMST) concerned with cognition and instruction in the middle school to post-secondary grades. DMS students enroll in DMS-specific courses and research groups as well as some courses in common with the HD and EMST programs. Applicants may apply for either M.A. only or M.A./Ph.D. degree programs.
Extended Description
Focus of Study
DMS is an interdisciplinary program that draws on various disciplines within cognitive science, including developmental psychology, cultural anthropology, and education. DMS faculty are engaged in research on:
- the development of children's mathematical and scientific
understandings in a wide array of settings in and out of
school;
- the design and study of innovative instructional practices
for assessing and promoting children's learning of mathematics and
science,
- the professional development of teachers engaged with
elementary and middle school aged students.
Faculty research is designed to deepen our understandings of relationships between culture, development and instruction in children's mathematical and scientific thinking

Entrance Requirements
Students who have a strong background in child development, developmental psychology, mathematics or science, cultural anthropology, or cognitive science are particularly encouraged to apply.
Type of Program (MA/PhD) -
Students may apply for either M.A. only or M.A./Ph.D. degree programs.
Structure of the Program
The DMS program is an apprenticeship approach to graduate training. With the support of faculty mentors in the DMS and affiliated HD and EMST programs (see above), students engage in research from the beginning of their studies. Through participation in seminars, colloquia, and research groups, students acquire grounding in the theories and methodologies underlying interdisciplinary inquiry.
Career Paths of Graduates
Students completing the Ph.D. program typically take on academic, research, and/or professional positions linked to their areas of concentration.
