Program Evaluation and Assessment
This program is for
students who want to apply quantitative and evaluative methods to the
problems of research, assessment, and program evaluation in
education. We encourage applications from students with a
mathematical, statistical, or computer data analysis background and
an interest in education, as well as students primarily interested in
education who want to develop their methodological skills to allow
them to do quantitative research and evaluation. The course of study
leads to an Ed.D. in program evaluation and assessment. Students are
encouraged to include the study of substantive educational topics in
their courses of study, as well as a variety of methodological
topics, in order to provide a context for methodological
applications.
This three-year program takes advantage of the many assessment and
evaluation projects conducted by faculty members from the school and
beyond to provide apprenticeships for students. The core of the
program is the study of rigorous methodologies appropriate for the
non-experimental reality of educational research and development. The
specialization prepares graduates to teach courses in evaluation,
assessment, and research methods in college and university
departments of education; to direct assessment and evaluation
projects at the national, state, and local levels; to serve as
consultants on evaluation methodology; and to apply advanced methods
in evaluation and assessment to educational projects. Research
assistantships, funded by a variety of agencies and projects, are
available for selected students pursuing a degree in assessment and
evaluation studies in a variety of areas, but especially in science
and mathematics education.
