Cultural Perspectives on Cognitive Development

This seminar explores advanced topics in Piaget's and Vygotsky's frameworks for the analysis of cognition and development. Of particular concern is the representation of “culture” in each treatment. Readings will include primary sources from these authors, their critics, and contemporary researchers who build on these frameworks.

Prerequisite: Participants should have completed ED200A or equivalent (readings on or by Piaget and Vygotsky)

Mathematics in Out of School Settings

This is a DiME related seminar with a focus on mathematics out of school and relations to mathematics in school. The seminar will blend readings on theory and methods for the analysis of mathematics in children's out of school lives with field projects in which students plan and carry out an analysis of case studies.
