aryl Gearhart's research focuses on professional development strategies to support teachers' interpretation of student thinking in mathematics and science. As a developmental psychologist and preservice elementary educator, she focuses most of her research on K-6 education. She is currently investigating the role of a reflective assessment portfolio in science teachers' developing expertise with classroom assessment, and has previously investigated other professional development strategies, including 'looking at student work' and analyses of video examples of children's mathematical problem solving. Recent publications include, "Developing expertise with classroom assessment: Learning to interpret student work" (with colleagues) in Educational Assessment; "When teachers know what students know: Integrating assessment in elementary mathematics" in Theory Into Practice (with G. B. Saxe); "Looking at student work for teacher learning, teacher community, and school reform" in Phi Delta Kappan (with J. W. Little and others).
