erbert Simons is interested in the academic and motivational problems of student athletes, minority student achievement, and reading and studying. He directs the Athletes and Academic Achievement master's degree concentration for students who have competed in sports and are studying the intersections of athletics and academics. In addition to his background in education, he has a doctor of Optometry degree from the Massachusetts College of Optometry. His writings include "The Athlete Stigma in Higher Edcaation in the Collge Student Journal "Race and Penalized Sports Behaviors," in the International Review for the Sociology of Sport(2003); "Non-cognitive Predictors of Student Athletes' Academic Performance," in the Journal of College Reading and Learning(2000); "Academic Motivation and the Student Athlete," in the Journal of College Student Development(1999); "Voluntary and Involuntary Minorities: A Cultural-Ecological Theory of School Performance with Some Implications for Education," in Anthropology and Education Quarterly(with J. Ogbu, 1997).
