lfrieda (Freddy) Hiebert's research attends to the texts that are used in reading programs with beginning and struggling readers, particularly students for whom English is a second language. Her work particularly addresses the manner in which fluency, vocabulary, and knowledge can be fostered through appropriate texts. One current research project involves the design and investigation of science texts in the Science/Roots of Reading project, a collaboration between the Graduate School of Education and Lawrence Hall of Science at UC-Berkeley. Another current project, in collaboration with Devon Brenner of Mississippi State University, involves an examination of wide-scale effects when opportunities to read appropriate texts are substantially increased as part of a state-wide Reading First effort. She is also the principal investigator for the GSE's partnership in the national center for middle-school English Learners (CREATE). Hiebert's most recent book is The teaching and learning of vocabulary: Bringing scientific research to practice (with Michael Kamil, 2005). Among her most recent publications are "Vocabulary assessment: What we know and what we need to know" (in press, Reading Research Quarterly , with P. David Pearson & Michael Kamil) and "State reform policies and the reading task for first graders" (2005, Elementary School Journal).
