Berkeley's Graduate School of Education has a strong fellowship program, with numerous avenues for applying for financial support. Generally about 75% of the continuing graduate students who submit the GSE's Fellowship Application for Continuing and Returning students, receive an award offer.

Continuing/Returning Graduate Student Fellowship Competition

Eligibility: Open to all GSE graduate students, who are U.S citizens, permanent residents, and international students.

University Fellowship awards are merit awards based on scholastic record, evidence of ability to do research or other creative work, and promise of productive scholarship. Students who apply for the University Fellowship awards will automatically be considered for other awards for which they may be eligible. University Fellowship block grant awards are made in varying amounts from a central source of funds that is allocated to the School of Education by the Graduate Division. Restricted awards are made from funds established by donors who wished to designate students in specific disciplines to receive awards. Award amounts vary, and the Fellowship Committee in consultation with the Areas and Programs makes selection. Students do not apply for specific departmentally restricted awards.

Following University of California Graduate Division policies, applicants are asked to provide basic fiscal information as part of the fellowship application process.

Financial Aid

Students who apply for financial aid receive an offer of financial aid from the Graduate Financial Aid Office at UC Berkeley. The priority deadline to complete the Financial Application for Federal Student Aid, FAFSA) is the first Monday in March. For more fellowship and financial aid information, please go to the UC Berkeley Graduate Division web site.

Student Employment

Graduate Student Researcher (GSR) and Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) positions are available to graduate students in the School of Education. Applicants who have been admitted to a graduate program in the School of Education should contact their faculty adviser to inquire about the possibility of employment. In addition to a stipend, students who work at least 45 percent time as a GSR receive full (resident) fee remission and nonresident tuition (where applicable). GSIs and GSRs receive partial fee remission if working at least 25 percent time. There are some restrictions on the amount of time a student can work, especially if the student is receiving a fellowship.

How to Apply for Fellowships

The Fellowship Competition for the Graduate School of Education has a February 25, 2011 deadline. Submit applications on or before this date to the Fellowships Coordinator. The Area/Program faculty review the application folders, and then a second review is conducted by the department-wide Fellowship Committee.

Letter notification of the fellowship outcome happens in early to mid-April.
