for Fall 2008
Required Examinations
See the table
Programs of Study and Examination
Requirements to determine which tests you have to take for the
program which you are applying to. To ensure that your official
test scores reach the Education Admissions Office, use the
recipient code number as indicated below, for each examination.
Important: If you take the examinations after
the application deadline, your application will be considered on a
space-available basis only. You should register as early as
possible for these examinations, since space is often limited.
- Graduate Record Examination (GRE): Use recipient
code number R4833-3999. The General Test is required for all
programs except Developmental Teacher Education and the
Principal Leadership Institute. You must take the GRE in time for us
to receive your scores by the application deadline. Scores from the
computerized test take ten working days to arrive. For more
information visit the GRE site. Test
scores must be no more than five years old. Additional information
about registering for the GRE can be obtained from the Educational
Testing Service, 1947 Center Street, Berkeley CA 94704,
telephone: (510) 654-1200 or P.O. Box 6000, Princeton, NJ 08541.
Phone: (609) 711-7670.

Foreign Language (TOEFL): Use recipient code number R4833. All
applicants who earned their bachelor's degree in a country where the
official language is not English are required to submit passing test scores, unless they have studied at least one year in an
American college or university with a grade-point average of 3.0 or
better. Passing scores are 570 for the paper-based test, 230 for the computer-based test, and 68 for the Internet-based test (iBT). The Graduate Application for Admission and Fellowships
contains further information. Tests taken before June 2006 will not be
accepted. Please check with the testing agency to make sure that your
test date allows for sufficient time for your scores to be reported
to UC Berkeley before the application deadline. The International
English Language Testing System (IELTS) can also be used to meet
the language profiency standard. A passing score is at least seven
out of nine.
