William Riggle, 1925–2010
Longtime School of Education administrator and graduate adviser William
H. Riggle died at home on February 18 after a short bout with cancer.
Dr. Riggle coordinated summer session for the School for many years,
and founded the popular Summer Program for Teachers (SPT) 1966–83.
After his retirement from UC Berkeley in 1983, the program
changed names to the Summer Program for Educators, which ended in 1986. The
Summer Program for Teachers provided in-service (Fisher) credential
credits for many Bay Area teachers. The Bay Area Writing Project offered
its summer open program through the SPT. The
Summer Program for Teachers also offered courses with the Bay Area Mathematics Project, and
science courses affiliated with the Botanical Gardens and other campus
centers. Through their participation in the programs, teachers were able to recharge, while working with exemplary
instructors from UC Berkeley — including GSE Dean P. David Pearson,
who taught a reading course for teachers one summer — as well
as faculty from other campuses.
Dr. Riggle served as the Director for Admissions for the School of
Education, providing continuity and stability to the process. He maintained
excellent relations with the Summer Sessions Office, the Office of
Admissions and Records and the Graduate Division, and was a meeting
facilitator for Education alumni.
Born in Long Beach, California, Dr. Riggle attended high school in
Seattle, Washington; Reed College in Portland, Oregon; and UC Berkeley, where he earned his M.A. (1959) and Ed.D. (1965) from the
Graduate School of Education. Riggle also
received his teaching and administrative credentials from UC Berkeley. Dr. Riggle served in the European Theatre during World War II.
He is survived by his second wife, Gisela, and by his son David and
daughter Linda.
