School of Education alumnae Julie McNamara
(2006) and Meghan Shaughnessy (2009) have co-authored
the just-published Beyond
Pizzas & Pies:
10 Essential Strategies for Supporting Fraction Sense.
The book draws on their GSE dissertations and newer research as well
as practical strategies to support teachers in understanding and addressing
the most common misconceptions and challenges about fractions that
students face. Each chapter begins with a National Council of Teachers
of Mathematics (NCTM) connection, and examines one common dilemma that
students have with fractions. The book includes classroom strategies
and activities to prevent and address that dilemma. There are also
tables showing how each chapter aligns with three curricular programs: Investigations
in Data, Number, and Space, Everyday Math and EnVision Mathematics.
Former NCTM president Skip Fennell wrote the foreword, and the book
has been endorsed by mathematics education experts Deborah Loewenberg
Ball, Barbara Reys and Carne Barnett-Clarke, among others.
McNamara, a mathematics specialist at the Lawrence Hall of Science
Center for Mathematics Excellence and Equity; and Shaughnessy, a postdoctoral
research fellow at the School of Education at the University
of Michigan, will showcase their new book
at the Math Solutions booth at NCTM’s
Annual Conference, April
21–24
in San Diego.
