Susan Katz GSE Alumni Lead Groundbreaking Human Rights Emphasis at USF
Susan Roberta Katz

Susan Roberta Katz, Ph.D. Language, Literacy and Culture ’94, a professor of International & Multicultural Education (IME) at the University of San Francisco (USF) and a visiting professor at the Graduate School of Education, has developed an emphasis in Human Rights Education (HRE) for M.A. and Ed.D. candidates at USF, the first pedagogical college in the nation to offer that option.

Shabnam Koirala-Azad

Katz has plenty of support from her GSE and USF colleagues. USF assistant professors Shabnam Koirala-Azad (Language, Literacy and Culture ’94) and Emma Fuentes (Ph.D. 2005) helped develop and teach new courses for the human rights program. Miguel López, a fourth GSE graduate (Ph.D. 2007), is also an assistant professor in USF's Teacher Education and Department of International and Multicultural Education departments.

Katz and Koirala-Azad were awarded two grants in 2007 to research previously piloted courses, recruit additional instructors and develop the curriculum. A total of 17 IME students enrolled in the program’s second semester this spring with many more expressing interest for fall 2009 term according to Katz, who teaches two GSE courses:  “Approaches in Teaching English as a Second Language” and “Teaching Linguistic and Cultural Minority Students.”

The Human Rights Education program was recently featured in an USF News article.
