New Professional Adventures for Mayer, Sterling

Associate Dean for Professional Programs Diane Mayer has returned to her native Australia to try out a position as head of the School of Education at Deakin University in Melbourne.

Richard Sterling
, emeritus executive director of the National Writing Project and an adjunct professor in the Graduate School of Education, has agreed to serve a one-year term as Acting Director of Professional Programs.

"First of all, we hope Diane will return," Dean P. David Pearson wrote in an e-mail. "But if she decides to stay in Australia, we will wish her well on this new stage of her professional journey. Until things are settled, we will fill her position on an interim basis so that we can weigh several options for how to replace her."

Mayer began her appointment at UC Berkeley in 2004. Prior to that, she was Director of Teacher Education at the University of Queensland from 1998 to 2003, and held academic positions at the University of Southern Queensland for 10 years from 1988 to 1998.

Under Sterling's leadership, the Writing Project grew in terms of resources, reputation and scope of services.
