Nearly three-dozen students from San Francisco's Mission High School are attending GSE’s Academic Talent Development Program (ATDP) this summer.
While Mission High School students have been traditionally underrepresented at colleges such as UC Berkeley and academically challenging summer programs such as ATDP, these students — who are mostly children of immigrant families and all from poor to low-income economic backgrounds — will be well represented at the model program this summer.
That achievement has not been lost on the students or their supportive teachers. Mission teacher Amadis Velez, who recommended many of the ATDP students, hosted a May 30 fundraiser — "Futuro Sin Fronteras" — which raised more than $1,000 to help defray the cost of the students' textbooks, supplies and transportation.
“I’m proud and happy to see Mission High School students pave the way for future generations to achieve higher education therefore getting closer to a “Futuro Sin Fronteras,” said ATDP staffer Herlinda Tin, who collaborated with Velez on the identification and admissions process.
