Nearly three dozen past and present School of Education Spencer Fellows joined seven faculty members at Berkeley Botanical Garden on May 14 to mark a decade of success with the Spencer
Fellowship Institutional Research Training program.
Unfortunately, 2007-08 also marks the final chapter for the $10,000, one-time fellowship awards, the last year
of the Phase II five-year grant program. Through the program, Spencer Fellows
design and conduct independent research projects during their fellowship
year, but also receive support and mentoring from faculty and peers
in a series of special activities.
To commemorate the occasion, Research Day coordinator Mary Alice Callahan presented a silver tray from the Spencer Fellows to Spencer faculty coordinator
Judith Warren Little for her "10 years of hard work and mentorship.” Callahan praised Little for “always being able to see the potential in students” no matter what stage they are in.
Doctoral candidate Dafney Blanca Dabach also lauded the GSE professor for her facilitating, mentoring and group leadership skills "critical to the development of our work."
In
addition to a three-day research retreat, Spencer Fellows come together
for a mini-retreat to share progress at mid-year and also affiliate
with one of several mentoring groups available in the School of Education.
More than 100 former Spencer Fellows have gone on to take faculty
positions in a wide range of universities, colleges and research organizations.
