Grace Feuerverger

Visiting Scholar Finds Inspiration in Schooling

Grace Feuerverger

Grace Feuerverger, a visiting scholar in the School of Education from January to August, 2007, read from her new book, Teaching, Learning and Other Miracles at the Berkeley City Club on May 3.

Feuerverger's first book, Oasis of Dreams: Teaching and Learning Peace in a Jewish-Palestinian Village in Israel, was awarded AERA Division B Book Recognition, is associate professor in the Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto.

Feuerverger says that the book explores teaching and learning in schools as a “sacred life journey and a quest toward liberation. It was written for teacher/educators who wish to make a real difference in the lives of their students and speaks to everyone who finds themselves, as I did, on winding and often treacherous paths, longing to discover the meaning and potential in their professional lives at school.

“It honors the struggle of every child who seeks to be rescued, to be heard, and to speak the truth about his or her lived experience. Many such students fall by the wayside, too weary from experiences of violence, war, poverty or other oppressions to continue on their journey towards the life force.”

A child of Holocaust survivors, Feuerverger suggests that schools can be transformed into magical places that uplift the human spirit.

Teaching, Learning and Other Miracles may be purchased online or through other online and local commercial outlets.
