Ethan Johnson, who graduated from the Social
and Cultural Studies program in 2005, has been awarded a Ford Diversity
Postdoctoral Fellowship Fellowship for the 2007–08 school year.
He will be conducting research in Quito, Ecuador as a follow up to
his dissertation research, which examined the relationship between
schooling and racial inequality in an Afro-Ecuadorian region. Johnson,
an assistant professor of Black Studies Department at Portland State
University, was an advisee of Jabari Mahiri at the GSE.
Kristen
Lewis, who earned a master's degree from the Graduate School
of Education last spring, has been hired as the assistant coach for
UC Berkeley’s women's swimming program. Lewis, who had worked
for the Cal Athletic Department in an administrative capacity for
the past two years, is a former UCLA All-American and Academic All-American.
Derek
Briggs has won a National Academy of Education/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship.
Diana Bernbaum, was awarded a 2007–08 College Board Research
Grant. Both Briggs and Bernbaum were advisees of professor Mark Wilson
while they were students at the Graduate School of Education.
Janet Mutsumi Daijogo will be inducted into
the 2007 Marin Women’s
Hall of Fame. Daijogo earned a BA in Child Development from the School
of Education in 1959 and her education credential a year later.
