The 13th Celebration of Children’s Literature could be considered the luckiest ever, as threatening skies held off just long enough to ensure one of the most successful Celebration events ever.

Approximately 2,000 visitors jammed in and around Tolman Hall's second floor on Cal Day, April 21, to partipate in the free community event. They enjoyed fun, educational events that included a book fair with author signings, costumed characters Clifford and Wild Thing, storytelling, music, bookmaking and panels.

"As far as I know, this is the first profitable event we have ever had," said Celebration organizer Steve Cohen, "and I'm quite certain it was the lowest budget on record."

The Cal Student Store sold a record of approximately 750 children's books, easily surpassing last year's record for an off-site event. As such, approximately $1,400 will be going to the Graduate School of Education scholarship fund.

Cohen says that the better attendance and sales were at least partially attributable to the presence of both established and emerging Bay Area children's authors and illustrators. Of those, Todd Parr, Felisha Hoshino, LeUyen Phan, Sarah Klise, Rachel Rodriguez, Dashka Slater and Katherine Tillotson made their Celebration debut. In addition, the event featured the return of popular Bay Area children’s musical performer Gary Lapow, talented local storytellers Muriel Johnson and Clara Yen, tasty $1 barbecued sausages, bookmaking with the Bay Area Writing Project teacher consultant Linda Block and the magnetic appearance of Clifford.

"It was great to see so many kids and their families in and about Tolman Hall," said GSE Dean P. Daavid Pearson. "Come next year!"

Special thanks to sponsors: the Academic Talent Development Program, Scholastic Books, the Cal Student Store and the Graduate School of Education Alumni Association.
