GSE Makes Its Mark at AERA Chicago

Nearly 100 education researchers from UC Berkeley were among the more than 20,000 education officials from colleges and universities; federal, state and local agencies; think tanks; foundations; and the private sector in attendance when the
American Education Research Association (AERA) held its annual
conference in Chicago, April 9 –13.
School of Education personnel also received several honors:
Zena Mello,
Ph.D, a postdoctoral fellow in Cognition and Development, received
the Outstanding Dissertation Award in Human Development from Division
E, the Counseling and Human Development Division. Her dissertation, which was completed at Penn State, is entitled "Racial/Ethnic
Group and Socioeconomic Status Variation in Educational and Occupational
Expectations from Adolescence to Adulthood."
John R. Thelin (Ph.D., 1973) received the Exemplary Research Award for Division J, the Higher Education and Postsecondary Education division.
Assistant professor Cynthia Coburn was honored as an outstanding reviewer for her contribution to the journal American
Educational Research Journal/SIA in 2006. She received the prestigious Palmer Johnson Award at the 2006 AERA Conference for best academic scholarship published in an AERA journal during the 2005 volume year.
Professor Mark Wilson was appointed as a member of AERA's Grants Program Governing Board.
In addition, UC Berkeley alumna Lorraine McDonnell was voted president-elect of AERA.
Next year's conference will
be held in New York City March 24–28.
