The Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley announces an opening for a tenure-track or tenured appointment at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank in the education of English language learners, starting July 1, 2012. This is a full time position with a nine-month academic year appointment in the Language, Literacy, and Culture program.
Across the nation and world, schools struggle to educate language minority students, especially those who are also immigrants. Nowhere are these issues and struggles more salient than in states like California, with growing populations of immigrants whose primary language is not English. The candidate should investigate rigorous and theoretically grounded approaches to understanding and improving the language competencies of English language learners. Ideal candidates should engage in a research program that closely examines the classroom experiences of English language learners. The candidate should help shape the capacity of the field to provide effective instructional programs.
Candidates should hold a doctoral degree in a field relevant to the education of English language learners, including but not limited to second language acquisition, educational linguistics, or language and literacy education. They should have a record of high-quality research and the potential to achieve funding from competitive grants. They should have substantial experience as a practicing K-12 educator or as a researcher who has taught teachers to teach English to language minority students in K-12 settings. Candidates should have excellent teaching and mentoring skills appropriate to teaching and advising students in the doctoral/masters and credential programs. Experience and interest in teaching in the undergraduate minor is a plus.
Ideal candidates will possess working knowledge in all of the following areas, with expertise in one or more: (1) second language development and assessment, (2) teaching language minority students in formal and informal educational settings, including settings in which they must employ academic language to acquire disciplinary knowledge (e.g., history, science, math, or the humanities), and (3) the intersections among language, race, ethnicity, and culture as they relate to the teaching and learning of English language learners.
A complete application must include a detailed letter of interests and qualifications, a curriculum vitae, a sample of recent scholarly writings, and three letters of reference. Please submit materials online. Go to the English Language Learners search registration page for self-registration directions, uploading of documents in PDF, and accessing URLs for individuals providing letters of reference.
