Project IMPACT, launched in 2003 by faculty of the Graduate School of Education, supports K–12 classroom teachers — especially novices — who choose to serve in the Bay Area’s low income, low-performing public schools. Research shows that strong, experienced teachers are the single most important factor determining student success. However, one-third of new teachers leave within the first three years of teaching, and half are gone by the fifth year. Project IMPACT ensures that GSE credential graduates, as well as other teachers, receive the support they need to thrive and stay in the neediest schools. To date, the nationally recognized program has served 200 teachers.
Project participants gather biweekly to explore their own questions about teaching, learning, and schooling. An external facilitator (usually a doctoral student) assists the group, and participants receive a stipend to recognize their investment of time and energy. Throughout the school year, participants convene quarterly as a regional network for intensive professional development and to share what they are learning.
Participants report that Project IMPACT has inspired them to improve their teaching and hold fast to the ideal of making a difference for kids and society. The project also strengthens GSE’s ties to teachers in the field, grooms doctoral students to become effective teacher educators, and enriches learning opportunities for historically underserved students.

Provides substantial support for salaries, teacher stipends, publications, and other annual program operations.

Provides support for Project IMPACT’s research endeavors, which aim to disseminate best practices to the field of teacher induction and professional development.

Provides funds to "adopt" a local school-based, teacher inquiry group or to sponsor regional network events.
With your gift of $10,000 or more, you may establish an educational legacy in your name, or in honor of a professor, colleague, mentor, or loved one. The principal of an endowment is held intact in perpetuity and invested for growth to provide a steady flow of income to support your designated purpose. An annual payout of approximately 5 percent of the principal will support the activities of Project IMPACT.
