The Campaign for the Graduate School of Education

Center for Urban School Leadership

Strong leaders are the driving force behind strong schools, and our Center for Urban School Leadership supports the preparation and ongoing development of those leaders. The center’s programs — the Principal Leadership Institute (PLI), Leadership Support Program, and Coaching Initiative — reflect UC Berkeley’s commitment to serving the public interest by improving educational equity, student achievement, and school performance in our communities.

For eight years, the PLI, an intensive master’s study and professional credentialing program, has been the center’s anchor program for preparing teacher-leaders in K–12 urban settings to improve teaching and learning in their schools. Fully half of PLI graduates themselves are persons of color, and many are the first in their families to go to college, reflecting the demographics of the children they serve and providing an essential example and catalyst for educational equity.

The Leadership Support Program and Coaching Initiative support our graduates and novice and veteran administrators in local school districts with a pipeline of services that gives them coherent, consistent support in their challenging roles. These programs also link administrators to Berkeley faculty, programs, and research resources, helping them to create lasting professional networks.

Your investment in the Center for Urban School Leadership will enable us to sustain the excellence of this rigorous program and build an endowment to provide scholarships for aspiring leaders — all of whom are working teachers, many with families to support. You can play a significant role in supporting leaders who hold the key to transforming today’s urban schools, especially those that serve our most vulnerable youth.
