Children of Promise

Children of Promise, by Shirley Brice Heath and Leslie Mangiola (1991; 64 pages; $10.00), is a joint publication of the National Center for the Study of Writing and Literacy, the National Education Association (NEA), and the American Educational Research Association (AERA). Children of Promise addresses the literacy education needs of the culturally and linguistically diverse students who now populate our nation's schools.

In Children of Promise, university researcher Shirley Brice Heath and classroom teacher Leslie Mangiola offer a new perspective on students who are often labeled "at risk," asserting that they, like all our nation's students, are actually "children of promise." Heath and Mangiola cite several literacy programs in diverse classrooms that have succeeded by involving students in planning and carrying out the projects. The book is filled with practical ideas for classroom teachers who want to develop activities that can help all students to achieve their full potential.
