University of California, Berkeley
2nd Annual Summer Institute in Reading
Developing Tomorrow's Thinkers: Comprehension and Beyond
Overview
The 2006 Summer Institute in Reading at the University of California, Berkeley addresses comprehension of and learning from text. The National Assessment of Educational Progress recently reported that approximately two-thirds of American students perform below the proficient standard of reading comprehension—the standard needed for full participation in a digital, global society. The Institute addresses effective comprehension strategies identified by the National Reading Panel. It also attends to gaps identified by the National Reading Panel and the Rand Reading Study Group such as instruction of English Learners, comprehension in the content areas, and the needs of adolescent learners. The emphasis on scientifically based reading research makes the Institute an ideal context for educators working to achieve the goals of Reading First.
Presenters are among the nation's foremost scholars on comprehension and learning from text. Participants also have the opportunity to interact with small-group leaders, all of them are prominent researchers and teacher-educators. The Institute is intended for educators who are leaders of reading instruction—within state and regional agencies, districts, schools, colleges of education, and publishing companies.
The five-day institute is primarily a residential program, and fees include meals and accommodations at UC Berkeley's Clark Kerr Campus. The culminating experience will be a dinner cruise on the picturesque San Francisco Bay.
Participants can purchase 3.5 Continuing Education Credits for an additional $215.
