Information about CalNet

What is a CalNet ID?

CalNet

CalNet is a new online service at UC Berkeley that provides for authentication, authorization and information lookup. It consists of the CalNet Authentication Service and the CalNet Directory Service.

CalNet Authentication Service

A system whose main purpose is to allow people and services to prove their identities to each other in a reliable manner over the campus network. It is based on Kerberos, a network authentication technology originally developed at MIT.

Authentication refers to the process by which one party determines the identity of another. On an insecure computer network, where all traffic is potentially readable (and subject to tampering) by hostile parties, clear text passwords no longer can be relied on to provide assurance of identity. Consequently, protocols and software systems have been developed that allow people and services to prove who they are even in the presence of network eavesdroppers and attackers. Kerberos is such a system.

CalNet Directory Service

A secure, centralized service for obtaining authoritative information about campus-affiliated people, resources and computer applications, using LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol).

Authorization is the means by which, once authenticated, you may be assigned privileges or given access to online resources, based on your attributes or roles, as determined by a particular application. A directory service may be used as a source of such information.

The CalNet ID

Your CalNet ID is a unique identifier that (a) is registered in the Kerberos database and associated with a secret passphrase known only by you, (b) identifies your entry in the CalNet Directory, where UC-related information about you resides, subject to privacy considerations, laws and regulations. Currently, your CalNet ID is your employee ID or student ID, though eventually a mechanism will be provided for you to change it.

Applications using the CalNet ID

Some current campus applications that use the CalNet ID for authentication are Bear Facts by students and staff, Course List Download and E-Grades by faculty, and QUEST (CNS online ordering) by staff. A list of current and planned services that use the CalNet ID for authentication may be found at http://www.net.berkeley.edu/kerberos/kerb_apps.html. For further information about CalNet, see http://calnet.berkeley.edu/about.html.

CalNet Directory Service - On July 1, the new CalNet Directory Service was launched. This service is based on the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP), an Internet standard. It currently contains phone numbers, campus addresses, and other directory information about campus faculty, staff, students, and affiliates. You can access the information in the directory via the Web by using the Directory Lookup (http://directory.berkeley.edu/) or via popular programs such as Eudora, Microsoft Outlook, or Outlook Express. For specific information on setting up these programs to access the CalNet directory service, please see the above website.

CALNET SERVICES CURRENTLY AVAILABLE:

AirBears (http://www.net.berkeley.edu/wireless/) pilot wireless LAN service, available in selected locations around campus.

Bear Facts (http://bearfacts.berkeley.edu/).

e-Grades system allowing faculty to submit final grades (http://registrar.berkeley.edu/Acad/egradeinst.html).

WebDisk - This site provides access to WebDisk, an online storage site for UC Berkeley. You have to have a CalNet ID to use this service.

Course Development:

UC Berkeley Computing and Communications - Faculty Resources:

Some resources of interest are:

CyberCentral: The Center for Faculty Educational Development & Technology. Assistance for faculty and graduate students in developing in-depth course websites; setting up web accounts; and getting started with tools for web authoring and electronic communication.

CyberCentral is designed to assist faculty in a range of Educational Development and Technology (EDT) functions at UC Berkeley. Although these functions are handled in a distributed fashion by many units on this campus, we have all banded together to provide a single Point of Contact in each of the Educational Development and Technology areas at left. The Contact in each category has agreed to be knowledgeable about all campus resources in each category and to provide consultation, support, project management and referral services. For more information on how this site fits into long-range plans for the future of educational development and technology on campus, see our vision statement.

Responding to Inappropriate Use of Computing and Network Resources - This is a Q&A web page covering topics such as where to report abuses of email and privacy issues. An example would be:

Q:Where do I report misuse?

A: If the material in question was sent from or resides on Berkeley Campus ("berkeley.edu") resources, e.g. _@berkeley.edu, _@eecs.berkeley.edu, etc., send email to: abuse@berkeley.edu.
