Corey Lab 1635 Tolman Hall

This instructional development laboratory is available for Graduate School of Education (GSE) small groups as well as individuals working on education projects. Computers are available for drop-in use by GSE personnel and for reservation by School of Education classes between 8:00 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. M-F. To use one of the Macintosh computers, users need to sign in at the ETSC office in 1650 Tolman.

Hours

Lab hours: 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m.

After hours: Faculty may reserve the lab for use after the posted hours IF and ONLY IF the class starts before 5 p.m. The instructor will be responsible for shutting down all the computers and securing the lab by closing the doors. Any equipment borrowed from the ETSC office should be repacked into its traveling case and can be left in the lab. The instructor will be held responsible for the equipment until ETSC opens the following business day.


Schedule

Please check the schedule for prior reservations before entering the lab. The Corey Lab schedule is posted in the following locations:
    • Beside the door to Corey Lab.
    • On our Room Reservation web page.
    • On the wooden doors to the ETSC hallway.
    • Inside the ETSC office.

Usage

The lab is available for use by GSE personnel (Faculty, Staff and Registered Graduate Students of the GSE) only. Faculty may reserve the lab for classes.

Responsibilities

Instructor: The instructor of classes held in the Corey Lab will be held responsible for leaving the lab in clean condition. This includes:
  • Picking up any handouts left in the lab.
  • Stacking the blue chairs.
  • Throwing away any trash accumulated during the class.
  • Erasing the chalkboard. v Returning the projection screen to the UP position.
  • Enforcing the no food or drink rule in the lab.
  • If the class ends after 5 p.m. the Instructor will also be responsible for shutting down all computers and securing the lab by closing the door to the lab.

Food and Drink

NOT PERMITTED IN THE LAB AT ANY TIME.

Reservations

The lab can be reserved by GSE personnel by filling out the form in the ETSC office two weeks prior to the first day of class. This form is NOT currently available on the web.

Software

The following software is currently available on the computers:
  • Word 98
  • Excel 98
  • PowerPoint 98
  • SPSS
  • Safari
  • Internet Explorer
  • Eudora
  • Fetch
  • Terminal
The Scanner also has Photoshop and OmniPro.

Installing Software: Software may only be installed on the computers by Computer Support Personnel. Software needed for classes must be given to Beth preferably 2 weeks before the first day of class. At minimum 1 week before the start of class. Software submitted after the 1 week deadline CAN NOT be guaranteed to be available on the computers.


Hardware

External Drives Zip: More will be available in the near future on selected machines. Floppy: Floppy drives are currently available on each computer.

Special Class Folders

These folders are created on a class by class basis. For each class a folder and a user and password are created. The folder can be used to store projects, in lieu of students needing to bring disks. Instructors wishing to have class folders created should contact Beth at least 2 weeks prior to the start of the class. Instructors: Has special access privileges. See Beth for more information. Class: This folder is used by the students and can be accessed throughout the semester by using the special user and password created for their specific class.

Printing

Laserprinting is available to lab users for $ .10 per page. Laser print outs are picked up and paid for in the ETSC office. A Laser Print Out card is also available at the ETSC office. Users are entitled to 120 print outs for $10.00. Any printer in Tolman Hall can be accessed. For more information contact Beth Muramoto.

Future Plans

Future plans for the Corey Lab include:
  • File Server: The ability to store files for users and classes.
  • Net Booting: The ability to start up Corey Lab macs andsimplifying installation, file management and default configuration.
  • Wireless Networking: The ability to access the internet using portables simplifying rearrangement of lab. NOW AVAILABLE
  • More Zip disk drives on selected iMacs.
